Tanchong (단청)

Tanchong means literally “red and blue” pigments. These colors seem to be congenial to Korean sensibilities. They were traditionally used in painting the pillars, rafters, and eaves of Korean palaces, Buddhist temples, pavilions, and the houses of the nobility. Tanchong may be said to characterize the traditional Korean architecture in terms of color.
